The rehabilitation and urban reactivation project in Mithakhali was developed during the international workshop IN: CH 2014 in the Indian city of Ahmedabad with indian, swiss and spanish students. The aim was to study a semi-consolidated area of the city, an ancient village absorbed by the rapid urban growth of Ahmedabad, develop an analysis of the possible problematics and positive factors and suggest any improvements or possible future development of the area.
The proposal works with the public space focusing on removing physical barriers in the borders of Mithakhali that hinder the creation of consolidated and interconnected public spaces.
Being connected to the network is the first condition required for the integration of the part into the whole, the unit into the system. In this analysis, some isolated spaces are identified.
1. Urban Park enclosed in itself with two entries far away from the residential area.
2. Pocket cluster surrounded by the back of the houses and not connected to the open space network.
3. Oversized road with a wall end that disconnects it from the movement network and avoids cross interaction between the facing houses.
4. School backyard with no access from it.
5. Temple delimited by a wall in its north edge.
6. Low density area not used for social interactions.
They have potential to be used more than the used is given today just by improving its connectivity though their edge conditions.
